Where does the zip code go when addressing formal wedding invitations?
October 31, 2009
I am putting together my addresses to be sent to the calligrapher. Do you put the zip code after the city & state on the same line–or do you put the zip code on a line below the city & state? I have seen it both ways. Which is correct? Also, do you spell out the word "apartment" or do you do "#1A"? I keep trying to research this and keep getting different answers. I know this sounds stupid, but I have some very particular relatives that will be sure to call me and let me know that I did it wrong! Thanks for your help.
You put the zip code on the same line as the city and state. You can do either way for apartment. Or you can put Apt 1a instead. Most people don’t write out the whole word apartment.
example:
Jane Doe
123 45th Street Apt 1A
City, State 12345
Good Luck!!

You put the zip code on the same line with the city and state. Apartment is abbreviated "Apt". Good Luck!

My understanding is that your abbreviate nothing on an invitation, except titles (Mr., Mrs., Dr., etc) and the state (CA as opposed to writing out California).
The Post Office would prefer you put the City, State (abbreviated) and Zip Code all on the same line.
By this, you would make it:
Ms. Jane Doe
Apartment 1A
1234 Main Street
Anywhere, ST 12345

When my mom sends letters she puts the zipcode below the city and state. She says it helps the mail get there faster because it helps them to see it quicker. I dunno I think it is personal choice.
