You get what you pay for. I’v e been practicing calligraphy for over 25 years and have seen some pretty crappy examples of calligraphy. You want the best you gotta pay! There are many “calligraphers” but only a handful that actually have a fluid, consistent, beautiful hand. Look up the expert Edward Johnston and see what a professional is capable of. Of course if your event is just mediocre and you don’t care about quality go ahead and use an inkjet printer!

$5 per envelope is way extreme unless you are adding gold/silver on every envelope haha.

I charge $1.25 for each outer envelope, and each envelope usually takes between 5-10 minutes you have to add a lot of love to each envelope. So if you multiply that by 100+, that’s a lot of minutes.

$1/invitation

and once she gets responses back
she will do place setting cards as well

I looked into this myself, and decided against it when I discovered that calligraphers of any worth charged $5-$10 per invitation (not counting envelops; same price applies). I would suggest you go with a friend or family member who has very pretty handwriting. If they’ll do it as a wedding gift that’s great, if not pay them a small fee for the service.

$5 an invitation? Geez, that’s outrageous! It’s much cheaper to find someone locally who does calligraphy than to go with one of the internet companies that obviously scams people. ($5 an invite just amazes me. I wouldn’t want to pay that either!)

I’m paying $225 for 150 invitations (outside AND inside envelopes). It works out to be $1.50 per invitation.

If your mom wants to be "low-cost", figure out how long it would take her to do the work and multiply that by $7 to $10 per hour plus a little bit for the ink she is using up (how much would a new pen or jar of ink cost her?).
I’ve heard of some people that charge per line fees or per envelope fees.
I bought a kit and am teaching myself to do it

I dont know where you live, but in alabama, I found a lady that did them for 1 dollar and invite. Imho, there was no need to spend anymore money, so I just addressed them all myself in my best handwriting with a fine point black sharpie. No complaints so far. And if people want to complain that they werent done by a calligrapher, tell them they are welcome to pay for it.
